Maria's marriage was not a happy one. Thomas Rowe was absent a lot of the time. This would explain a rumor from Eliabeth Burr that Thomas Rowe had a second family somewhere else. This is probably the ownly contact between the Rowes and the Muddocks, this was because the Muddocks looked down on the Rowes. Another reason is that Thomas (presuambly) had got Maria pregnant. She was a great church goer.18 |

The City of London Lying-In Hospital was founded as a voluntary hospital in 1750 and was rebuilt in 1771 and again in 1907. It became known as the City of London Maternity Hospital in 1918. A training school had been established for medical students, midwives and monthly nurses by the end of the 19th century. Before the rebuilding of 1907 there were 36 beds, thereafter there were 71. Admission was by governor's recommendation. The Hospital was evacuated to Brockett Hall, Hertfordshire during the Second World War. It became part of the NHS in 1948 and was closed in 1983.8 |
