| Note |
3 September 1878 |
The sinking of the Princess Alice in 1878 was one of the most serious civil disasters ever in Britain. Seven hundred people died in a very short time, mostly of poisoning. They were almost all Londoners and came from every part of the capital. Although the accident took place on 3 September, the Muddocks are not named for another ten days. The Times reports on 13 September: Henry Creed Muddock, aged 7, son of Henry Grigson Muddock, of 120, Sussex Road, Holloway (already identified); buried as unknown; clothing identified by Daniel Bridegroom, cousin of the deceased. The party consisted of five, all of whom were lost. Witness stated that all the other members of the family were buried in London, and he wished to know what steps he ought to take to have the body of the deceased conveyed thither also. Further on we find: Harry Maddock, 120 Sussex-road, Holloway. Identified by Samuel Bridegroom, 133, St. John-street-road, Clerkenwell. I have been unable to identify the other three members of the party from the photocopies of The Times that I have been working from.36 |
